A HOTEL "BETWEEN THE YARD AND THE GARDEN"
The Hôtel de Caumont is located in an aristocratic quarter of the old town of Aix-en-Provence, the Mazarin district. On the Parisian influence a hotel appeared "between yard and garden", architecture diagram in the sixteenth century in Paris reporting on city level corresponds to the castle and its reasons. Four elements characterize this plan: the gate, the courtyard, the main building and the garden, which lead hierarchically from public space to private space.
The hotel is located on a square plot, to the northeast the main part of the building, to the northwest the main courtyard, to the southeast a walled garden and to the southwest the building of the commons. Dish. The structure "between the yard and the garden" is adapted to the square area here and offset and not enfiladed.
This type of construction "between the farm and the garden" disappears in 1680 in Aix-en-Provence, which favors the construction of hotels on the street to stand out from the Parisian style. The portals are then designed more in a typical for the southern taste trend of Baroque.
Following the standard of its unique design in Aix-en-Provence, it represents an example of 18th century French architecture. The carport portal, the facade and the wrought iron railing were added in 1925 to the additional monument list. The entire hotel was classified in 1987.
