The origin of the name Queluz, is said to have derived from the Arab word quê or cã, which means narrow valley or riverbed, and lûz or Ilûz, which means almond. In Queluz people frequently flocked to the Court to watch serenades, horse shows and fireworks, in celebrations of the patient saints, especially Saint Peter, and of the birthdays of the "Royals".
Alongside the "Portuguese Versailles"
The Pousada de Queluz is found in the clock tower building, next to the National Palace of Queluz, known as the " Portuguese Versailles " and the permanent residence of the royal family from 1794. The building of the Tower is by the architect and staff sergeant Manuel Caetano de Sousa, and served as a warehouse and as the quarters for the staff in service to the palace.

The Cozinha Velha restaurant, a result of the adaptation of the old palace's kitchens, is an ideal option for official gala dinners. The Pousada de Queluz restaurant holds a harp recital every Friday at dinner.
