The world's fashion capital

Milan was founded by the Insubres, a Celtic people. The city was captured by the Romans in 222 BC, and later was the capital of the Western Roman Empire from 286 until 402 AD. Milan became one of the most prosperous Italian cities during the Middle Ages playing a primar role in the Lombard League. Few cities are as geared up for festive shopping as Milan. Whether for fashion, furnishings or food, it's all within easy walking distance, and you can treat yourself to some fine food and culture between shops.
