DESCRIPTION
Hotel Narain Niwas Palace is one of the best heritage hotels in the princely state of Rajasthan and provides a good example of the history that collapses with modern times.
Centrally located in Jaipur, the Pink City of India, the palace was built in 1928 by General Amar Singh Ji, then Thakur of Kanota.
DINING
In the royal kitchens of Rajasthan the food was very serious business and rose to the level of an art form. Hundreds of cooks worked in the stately palaces and kept their recipes very closely guarded. Some recipes were passed on to their sons and the rest was lost forever.
It was a matter of great prestige to serve unusual dishes for guests and the royal chefs were encouraged to experiment. The stories of how cooks were trying to impress their guests by presenting at least one memorable item on the menu have now become legends. The monthly budget ran into rockets and the royal guests were treated with delicious delicacies.
HAWA MAHAL
The huge confection is a trompe l'oeil in masonry, for it tends to deceive the eye. In truth, the Hawa Mahal is all facade, an elaborate palace exterior hall with nine hundred and fifty-five windows and niches of inconceivable delicacy. But behind this facade are no buildings, because it is a labyrinth of corridors and resting places. The royal women of Zenana used to see and see the city, or watched the processions that descended down. The sly facade also caught the breeze and earned it the name "Palace of the Winds".
