According to legend, Wartburg Castle was founded by Count Ludwig the Leaper of the Ludowingian dynasty.

An influx of craftsmen means three market settlements (on today's Karlsplatz, Frauenplan and Marktplatz) begin to merge into a town.

First documentary evidence of Eisenach.
1182 - 1188
St. George's Church is built and dedicated to Eisenach's patron saint and the Landgrave of Thuringia.
Around 1200
Eisenach's town walls are built.
1247 - 1264
The Thuringian wars of succession result in Hessen splitting off from Thuringia - Eisenach and Wartburg Castle fall to the House of Wettin.
14th century
Eisenach's prosperity is weakened by its geographical isolation on the western edge of the landgrave's territory and by devastating town fires, floods and pogroms against the Jews.
